In the artist’s words

I began to feel troubled by how similar faces were becoming: the same noses, lips and contours. In this work, I reflect on what makes a person change themselves to fit an idea of beauty.

My subject has a deliberately elongated neck. But is that really a flaw? And who decides which features are beautiful and which need correcting?

As a counterpoint to the pursuit of a single ideal, I turned to nature. There are thousands of species of fern, with different sizes, shapes and structures. None tries to become like another.

Perhaps diversity itself is a form of beauty.
